The windy city

5 April 2007

Today I make my way to Essaouira, my final stop in Morocco before returning to Casablanca for my exit.  It was a 3h bus ride from Marrakech.  Upon arrival at Essaouira, I was a bit lost for directions to my accommodation.  I knew it wasn’t too far away so didn’t want to pay for a taxi.  Instead, I paid a porter to take my luggage, on a trolley, to my hotel.  While I may have been capable of handling my luggage myself, it seemed like a good solution.  In the end it proved to be a wise move as the walk was a little longer than expected.

I have caught the Essaouira on a good day (for me), but bad for the windsurfers.  It isn’t too windy.  It feels more like the Greek Islands but my neighbour on the bus says Portugal.  I’ll take her word for it since I haven’t been to Portugal and besides the town has Portuguese origins.

It was pleasant wandering around the old townwith its white-washed buildings and blue doors.  I didn’t see any fishermen come in with their catch for auction, but I did see plenty of seagulls.  While they’re quite a pest at times, they do make a good photo.

The fort (and maybe the old town) was used in the shooting of Orson Welles’ movie of Shakespeare’s Othello.  I don’t do movies and I don’t do literature, so I wouldn’t really know.  There’s now a square name after Orson.

I’m in a nice family-run hotel tonight with a great rooftop view of the sea and the sunset that’s coming.  All that plus small puffs of black smoke from the building next door, suggesting there’s a hammam in there.
