Back to school

3 March 2007

I started the day with scrambled eggs with Danny in the hostel kitchen at the Saila, courtesy of Danny.  I offered cake and melon to share.

I spent the morning at Marie’s before having lunch with Lou and Kristina.  Quarter chicken is kinda a standard lunch fare here for many of us at school.  The “broast” chicken is tasty and it is a good source of protein as we often take a simple dinner of beans or eggs with bread.  Some of us avoid the chicken at night as it could be leftover from during the day.

After lunch, I went to see Jameel, the school principal along with Marie and Kristina.  They helped negotiate for me to shift back to the main school hostel.  Someone by the name of Ryan had just vacated and I could have his room.  It was a double but I could probably have it all to myself.  Fingers crossed.

Then I started back at school for more Arabic lessons.  I had been dreading it but I was delighted by my new teacher, Ameen.  He had agreat sense of humour, spoke good English, gave good explanations and feedback.  His first wife is Yemeni but his second is German.  He tells me that both wear the niqab (cover over the face).

In the evening, I went for an Ethiopian dinner to farewell Anya, someone I didn’t know.  Here I met Natalia, half Indonesian and half Australia.  We had some nice chats about the Indonesian/Malay food that we love.
