Shifting to the north of Sicily

15 August 2017

Today we change sides, moving from Catania in the east of Sicily to Palermo in the northwest.  It was a better way of exploring the further parts of the island and Palermo without having to return to do a long trip.

It was my fourth day of feeling bloated but life goes on, on the road.  We opted to drive through the south near Argiento, where we wanted to visit the Turkish Steps.  There was the usual parking hassles due to crowds so we found an hourly place which was cheaper than an all-day place (since we didn’t expect to stay for long).

It was low tide and the sea condition wasn’t appealing with shallow water and seaweed.  We continued our drive to Palermo without lunch (we did have a small mid-morning snack).

As we had a car, we had chosen a B&B about 20 minutes from the city centre.  We had kinda organised an arrival time via email back and forth and they mentioned “after 1700” so we timed our arrival accordingly (after a detour to the surrounding area to delay ourselves).

I must have come across some free wifi when I noticed a new message saying that they wouldn’t be home till 1900.  So we drove down into the city centre and the waterfront, where everything was closed due to the Feast of the Assumption.

It was like a ghost town; even Carrefour was closed!  We eventually found Lidl supermarket where things were very cheap.  After killing some time, we grabbed dinner at the main train station.  We managed to find some wifi to confirm that they would be home at 1900.

The B&B was a plain concrete building on the outside but very nice and modern inside.  It was good choice!  Parking was free but spaces were limited without to having resort to the streets.  I thought the neighbours wouldn’t appreciate outsiders taking up their parking but apparently the area consisted of extended family.
