Blue Cruise Day 2

23 July 2017

Captain had warned us that he would be starting up at 0500 for a long day on the move. In fact we would actually cover very little distance on the first and third days and most of it would be done today.

I woke briefly when the engines came to life but fell back asleep till before 0900. I probably had deeper sleep after we set off, despite the noise and the strong sun (sunrise is around 0600).
Breakfast was served around 0900 and soon after that we had a swim near Kalkan. We moved on to the Five Islands area near Kas (pronounce Cash) where we would let three people off for diving.

We anchored, had lunch (minus the divers) before having the second swim of the day.

We cruised to Kas afterwards, getting there around 1330. Lady Jane was parked in the proper harbour area where we disembarked to explore the town. It was scorching hot and after a little exploring, we settled into a cafe for a drink. We were due back on board at 1630 and most of us stocked up on water to bring back on board.

Price of water and drinks on board had been advertised as “reasonable” but in fact, they are on the high side of restaurant pricing. I had expected something in between a shop and a restaurant. Eg. water was TL1 to 1.50 in a shop for a big bottle but it was TL2 for a small bottle on board. Beer was typically TL12 in a restaurant but TL15 on board.

Afternoon tea was served on board as we cruised to the Kekova area. At around 1830, we parked in an area which the Captain referred to as Burch Bay (not sure of spelling). There was a gate leading to a castle but the Captain said it wasn’t on our itinerary and we would be visiting another at Simena in the morning. The spot was secluded and calm once the day trippers had left.

On land were some white long-haired goats. We couldn’t wait to have our third swim of the day. With sunset around 2015, there was plenty of time for more cool-dipping before dinner.

Dinner tonight was a little later at around 2045. Captain BBQ’ed the chicken which was accompanied by some delicious sides. I saw the cook deepfry the eggplant cubes (which she later topped with chopped tomatoes) and also deepfry the courgette slices (which she topped with cheese and grilled). I don’t know why it was necessary to deepfry the vegetables when they weren’t going to get crispy … but it was delicious.
