Stocktake of life

11 September 2008

It is my last night here in Vientiane and my last night with my Couchsurfing host Patrick.  We hit town for a nice dinner by the Mekong, looking over at Thailand on the other side.  Then to a roof top bar for a few beers and margaritas.  He has been most hospitable … his maid cooks him dinner and I even got to dig into it before he came home from work!  The thing I enjoy about meeting people in my travels is that it opens my mind to new ideas, including how I could live my life differently:

  • Perhaps I can teach maths here somewhere in the world on an expat contract … I have advanced maths papers from uni … all I need is the teaching qualifications (which Kim has).  Too bad we can’t combine our qualifications.  The money seems good and one gets allowances for housing, airfares etc.  I’d get to live in an exotic country and explore the surrounding region during school holidays.
  • Or life could be even extravagant if I worked for an NGO or aid organisation (a lot of them do not rough it).  An expat teacher’s life seems modest in comparison.
