Duxford aviation museum

17 October 2003

Kim’s parents, Pat and Fiona, came to Downham Market today and we had an outing together to Duxford which is famous for its aviation museum, officially known as the Duxford Imperial War Museum.  The journey took over an hour and we arrived before lunchtime, so we grabbed lunch before having a good wander around the different hangars.

The new American hangar was impressive with a B52, a DC3 and various fighters hanging from the ceiling.

We missed two hangars, namely Hangar 5 (due to restoration) and Hangar 4 for the Battle of Britain (due to time as Pat & Fiona had an appointment to visit some friends).

I always love seeing the Concorde so we saved that for last.  We boarded and walked through a VC10, then a Monarch Bristol 175 Britannia (a four-engined propeller aircraft) before doing the same through the Concorde.

Fiona had arranged to visit friends Desmond and Richard.  Richard was an ambassador to Spain, Hungary, Sweden etc.  They had bought their lovely home in this location “as it was accessible to our poorer friends who don’t have cars”.

It was a brief visit for us here but Pat and Fiona were staying for a couple of nights.  We organised my brother-in-law Mike to come collect us from here and we had dinner at home.  We noticed at the house that Mike had put up the number “80” tiles which we had bought from Madrid.  I now know that people here don’t have post boxes and letters are delivered through a slot in the door.  The tiles affixed to the front of the house looked rather small and I wish we had got bigger ones.
