Brazil’s largest city

25 July 2019

With all sightseeing in Blumenau done, we had nothing to do but relax between breakfast and our midday checkout.   The bus to the airport was scheduled at 1330 so we decided that it would be safe to attempt to summon an Uber around 1230 and still have the bus as a backup.

Kim went to get one of those gorgeous avocado sandwiches we had last night before we successfully got an Uber immediately at 1230.  We got to the airport 2h30 before our 1605 flight to Sao Paulo Guarulhos Airport.

It was a lot of time to kill in a small airport with limited space but enough food outlets.  We grabbed a drink and ate our sandwich before heading airside.  Our Gol flight left about 10 minutes late but arrived on time a cool grey, misty Sao Paulo at 1705.

With a successful internet connection we Uber’ed to Calstar Hotel in the centre of the city close to the various points of interest.  It was dark by the time we arrived.  We dropped our gear and headed out for dinner.

Despite being close to the centre, it felt a little seedy.  The sidewalks were rough and there were prostitutes (some transgender) hanging around.  But there were a few nice enough eateries where we had a good feed.

We were back in our room straight after and I was in bed by 2000 reading and planning.  What an exciting way to spend our first night in Brazil’s largest city of 12 million people (21 million in the metropolitan area).  It is also the world’s second largest city by population of its urban area.
