Daytrip to Ghent

25 July 2014

We did a trip to Ghent today. Some people recommended staying at Ghent but because Belgium is quite compact, we figured it is easier to not move around too much with luggage and stay for four nights in Brussels.

We opted for a hotel buffet breakfast before heading out. It was served on the 9th floor of the hotel. The place was buzzing with guests. We found a spare table; I put down my juice and Kim his cooked breakfast. We both popped away to get a few more things and found a foursome (from a country which shall remain nameless) sitting at our table despite our food/drinks there. I had a word to them in their language and two of them moved on. Kim wasn’t too happy and found us another table elsewhere.

Getting to Ghent involved taking the metro, train (about 35 mins) and tram. Once in the centre of Ghent everything was within walking distance.

The town was lovely like Brugge with beautiful buildings and the canals. Our timing wasn’t the best as the town had been set up with lots of temporary structures for a music festival, detracting from its historic beauty. We went into the beautifully restored St Nicholas, the base of the Belfry and the Cathedral. Things were getting to be a bit of a blur; we were having too much of the same kind of stuff.

We made our way to the Friday Market and saw that it had been set up as a funfair. We found a Turkish restaurant that had a mezze platter that appealed to us and made that our lunch before heading back to Brussels.
