Temple of Apollo

24 May 2006

I must be in holiday mode waking up at 0900.   But I had plenty of time to do everything so it wasn’t a worry.  I headed out around 1000 walking along the waterfront and found the bus to get to the Temple of Apollo. It turned out to be a short ride which I could have walked.

Anyway, the temple ruins were situated on a small “island” just off Naxos and was connected by a narrow strip of land.

Temple of Apollo is located on a small “island” joined to Naxos.

Looking back to Naxos from Temple of Apollo.

I returned to the old town for a walk and self-catered my lunch with a cheese pie, stuffed vine leaves, tomato and wine.  I kept out of the heat till 1600 before going out again, this time to Ag Giorgios beach.  The water was very shallow in the apparent low tide.  Despite that, the water was cold in the shallow and chilly in the deep.  I towelled off and stayed in the sun to warm up.

Back on my verandah, I got chatting with Andy from the US.  He was a very nice guy and I had noticed him running at the Temple of Apollo earlier.   We took dinner together and chatted heaps.  Strangely for a well-educated man, he didn’t know what Turkish Delight and muesli were.  Maybe they have different words for the same things in the US.

After dinner, we were offered a complimentary colourless spirit which looked like ouzo.  It was called kytron and made from lemon skin and leaves.  It had a beautiful citrusy scent and a slightly sweet taste.  With a small piece of complimentary baklava, I managed to resist my urge for dessert tonight.

Funny observation of the day:  In Santorini and Naxos, there were some shops with Chinese lanterns and words.  Normally I associate these with Chinese restaurants and takeaways.  But here, they seem to be for clothes shops!  Maybe the clothing come from China.
