Kamari & Ancient Thira

21 May 2006

I had an easy day of exploration today.  I walked to town and looked over the caldera.  It was a truly stunning view.  Somehow I didn’t expect the caldera to be on that side as it was obscured by all the buildings.

While in town, I collected by pre-booked ferry ticket to my next stop Naxos in two days time.  Near the station, I saw the bus to Kamari was there and waiting. I decided to skip the Museum and board the bus.

Kamari is a village with a nice black sand beach with bearable water temperature as I waded into it.  It was full of nice restaurants.  Coming from Yemen, I couldn’t help feeling the place was full of loud and fat tourists.

I continued to Ancient Thira by bus rather than by foot.  Unless you’re really into history, it seemed like piles of rock.  In terms of the visual, it wasn’t anything like visiting eg. Palmyra in Syria.
I returned to my pension by bus and rested in the afternoon.

Re-emerging in the evening when it was cooler I walked along the crater again.  The stunning views were spoilt by other tourists.  After Yemen, I’ve become very selfish about sharing my “great sights” with other people.

Dinner was good value at EUR7 plus EUR1.20 cover charge.  I was full with the salad, bread, olive paste, kebab, pita and chips.  But it didn’t stop me from getting a dessert of ice-cream from next door afterwards.
