Sunrise watching Nanga Parbat

1 October 2026

With the early night, I woke at 0300.  Sunrise was at 0600 and Ashfaq had told me to expect a golden view of Nanga Parbat. I went upstairs for a better view and found my way up to an even higher construction zone.

I waited for the sun to gradually get higher and also see the soft golden glow change to strong white.

Nasir had recommended doing a daytrip to the base camp of the south face of Nanga Parbat.  After breakfast, we left at 0820 for the ride to get there.

After about 1h15, we came to some tents with a man selling tea.  He said that it was the end of the road.  The view was very obscured here and we couldn’t actually see Nanga Parbat without having to a serious walk.

We weren’t sure if our location was the base camp or if we needed a walk to get there.  But it didn’t matter and we didn’t care.

It seemed silly to come here when the hotel site offered a better view but it was a nice drive through the autumn leaves, seeing the sheep and shepherds, and green grassy areas between poplar trees.  We could, however see another distant mountain.

We had a nice cup of chai and explored a little before heading back at 1030.  It was lunch time and we ordered lunch before resting for the rest of the day.

The day had started off scorching but when the clouds set in later in the day, it turned cold.  Like last night, it was cold and we retired early ASAP after dinner.
