Chaukundi Tombs
Today, we woke to news that Kim and John’s uncle John had passed away. We had been prepared for this and had visited him before commencing the trip.
After our usual wait for breakfast, we left the hotel at 0935 for Chaukundi tombs, getting there around 1020. These tombs of the Jokhio tribe are from the 15th to 18th Century.

We had noticed a depot for colourful trucks just outside the cemetery and stopped for photos before heading back.

Knowing that there wasn’t much in our area for lunch, I asked the driver to end the ride at Dolmen Mall instead of back at the hotel.
At 1135, many stores in the mall were closed, as was the food hall. We had to wait till 1200 before they opened and shared some Turkish and Chinese options. The Turkish was particularly enjoyable as it was spicier than the real thing and they were generous with the meat.
More family time
We rested back at the hotel from 1330 before heading to see Lana once more. This time, Jo brought some photos and I had some more on my phone to show her. Again, there were lots of stories to be exchanged.
Lana was disappointed to hear that we had been to Chaukundi as she hadn’t and would have loved to go. I hadn’t even thought that a local had never been. Oops!
Clifton Beach
Around 1700, we took a car from Lana’s to Clifton Beach. Being a Sunday, it was much busier than my previous visit.
The tide appeared to be low and it would be a long walk on the loose sand to where the action was close to the water’s edge.
A buggy turned up and we agreed to the price for a ride to the action and back. However, when I got there, I realised that I needed to stay longer to get a better piece of the action. So, I let Kim and Jo continue the ride and then go back nearer to the road.
The scene at the water’s edge chaotic and colourful. It was better than last time, with the crowds of people, camels, horses, vendors and a few annoying motorcycles.

After about 20 mins, I made my way back to meet up with Kim and Jo to find a ride back to Lana’s. We finished the day with dinner hosted by Lana’s Salman. That concluded our stay in Karachi and the main objective of the whole trip, which was to meet family that we had never met.
