Around Sanur

20 September 2018

We woke surprisingly early at 0700 and had breakfast served on our patio at 0830.  I had opted for the selection of Balinese cakes which were nice and not over-sweet.

Today would be a relaxing day with no specific agenda.  We didn’t have a pool for this hotel and there was no pressure to swim in the sea.  After all we have several days of the nearby islands up ahead.

At around 0945 we took a walk on Sanur beach.  From the golden shore, we could see some construction which we were told were lighthouses.  We walked northwards to the Inna Bali Beach Hotel where we stayed some 18 years ago when it was known as the Grand Bali Beach.  It wasn’t the most tidily maintained hotel back then and it has remained about the same.

We returned by way of the road.  Being late morning, it was very hot and we stopped for a very good mango shake and a papaya shake, both crammed with lotsa fruit.  With almost no ice in it, it wasn’t cold enough for our heated state, but I can’t really complain.

Though not hungry, we thought it would be best to get a car to my proposed lunch destination Sari Bundo, then another back to the hotel.  It seemed silly to walk another 15 mins back to the hotel for a brief rest and then get a return ride to the restaurant.

A Grab car took us to the Padang restaurant where we had some great rendang , dendeng, daun singkong and sambal.  The metered taxi back was very reasonable too which shows that if one strikes a cooperative driver who uses the meter (most of the time it seems in Indonesia), there’s little need for Grab.

After a rest, we headed out mid-afternoon for a massage.  All the staff at the “spa” were from Poso in central Sulawesi while the boss was from Toraja.  Being Christians, they do eat man’s best friend.  They were quite surprised that I knew about this but proud of it at the same time.  They like it cooked with ginger, galangal, turmeric and salam leaves.

We had dinner on Sanur beach.  I found the food a little too westernised, something which will probably continue in the days to come.  We had a ayam betutu ciabatta and a fish woku followed by some desserts.

Kim finished up the day with reflexology while I returned to the room.
