Nighstop before my mini-adventure

11 September 2018

Today I fly to Miri for an overnight before going inland to Borneo’s highlands for my mini-adventure. I ordered a Grab car on the app but none were available in my area. I tried numerous times and it was starting to worry me even though I had three hours till my 1500 flight. Perhaps it was the bad weather, or perhaps my app was pending an update. I updated the app and tried a couple more times and fortunately it worked.

As it was a public holiday, I got to the airport with two hours till departure despite a fuel stop. With no bags to check-in, I went straight through to the lounge for lunch before the flight to Miri.

I “Grab”-ed another car to the Walk Inn in central Miri. It was a pleasant hotel well-located for my nightstop with shops and eating with easy rich. At check-in, I had trouble finding my identity card and I was very concerned that without my passport I wouldn’t be able to continue the remainder of my trip.

Identity is strictly verified for domestic flights here unlike in Australia or New Zealand. Fortunately, I realised I had stashed it in the wrong slip within my wallet in a dazed state.

There wasn’t much to see and do on a public holiday evening around the shops so I went to the Bintang Mall by the hotel. For dinner, I had a beef stew at the Sugar Bun (a McDonald’s style outlet) at the mall. It was much nicer than I had expected.

I was surprised that Miri had an H&M in addition to a Uniqlo. Auckland, a much larger city didn’t even have an H&M until recently. I bought a pair of Uniqlo Airism undies to try out back in my room. I love their undershirts which I wear as a t-shirt and I wanted to try them out as undies. Not only did they feel nice but they fitted comfortably too. So I went back out to get three more pairs before bed.

And having had dinner around 1700, I needed a snack and dessert as well.
