Driving back via Mar del Plata

22 July 2018

We woke without an alarm around 0830.  We didn’t exactly have tonnes of time as our proposed 1000 departure would get us back in the early evening, if we took a detour through Mar del Plata.

Breakfast at the hotel consisted of ham, cheese bread and little else.  After last night’s dinner of ham and cheese, it seemed like too much of a good thing.

We set off at our intended time and the drive to Mar del Plata was around an hour.  We stopped on the waterfront for a short-lived walk as it was freezing and a little windy.  We continued in search of a cafe to refresh the driver and found McDonald’s with a very sunny glassed-in area.

The remainder of the journey back to Buenos Aires took the same road we had been through yesterday.  We arrived at Aeroparque, the largely domestic airport, around 1830 and returned the car to the multi-storey carpark.  Localiza checked the car carefully before we descended the terminal building for the taxi rank.

For the first time in Buenos Aires, I encountered a slightly creepy driver.  He showed me his WhatsApp number twice and said I should take a photo of it for security.  And then stressed that he had a taxi license.  He was keen to drive us elsewhere if we wanted.  With peak traffic and the taking the toll highway, our ride was a little more than we had expected.

We returned to the Centuria Hotel for the night and took dinner at La Junta 1810 again where we especially enjoyed the Spinach Pie.
