Planning hassles

17 June 2018

We had the same breakfast of muesli and milk before heading to Bucharest’s railway station by taxi.  It was a short wait before we could board our train for Brasov.

Once in the countryside, the landscape varied between green and brown.  We pulled into Brasov 2h40 later and took a taxi uphill to the old town where we put up at Casa Terezia.  This was a simple no-frills place but very cheap at just EUR25 per night.  And it was very handy to the old town square.

I was more than ready for food.  We sat down for a pizza in the old town square and planned the remainder of our day and the next, deciding on doing things in Brasov today and around the outskirts tomorrow.

Back in the room, we rested and tried to get ourselves a tour or a cheap rental car to the Bear Sanctuary and Bran Castle.  Many business were closed and we had no luck with replies.  We then noticed that it was starting to rain; in fact there was a weather warning on my phone app.

Our remaining option was to book a car with Sixt (cheap but on request, which may not be confirmed by the time we needed it) and a pricey car with Avis (fully cancellable).  We did both.  We had overheard people say yesterday how hard it was to organise things and we kinda dismissed it in our minds, but I guess those people must have struck a Sunday as well.

The weather was still miserable when we wandered out around 1730.  It cleared sufficiently by 1800 when the free walking tour started, so we decided to join in.  The guide was well-spoken but not the most interesting as he dwelled on things that could have been just mentioned in passing.

Sadly, the Black Church closed as we got to it and it would be closed tomorrow being Monday (as with all museums in town).

We had a beautiful dinner in a nice indoor restaurant.  What a change from the glorious outdoor lunch that we had earlier in the day.
