Eleven hours of airborne torture

17 December 2012

I checked in for my flight to Hong Kong with an ETD of 2359. As I’m travelling on standby, I had checked the loads for this flight several times in the lead-up. The flight had been quite full but seemed to have cleared a little. So I was surprised that I could not be issued a boarding pass. I had to return to the counter about an hour before departure to try my luck again.

Fortunately there were a few no-shows and I was able to travel. Even more fortunately, I had an aisle seat.

Despite that, the flight was a torture. I didn’t sleep a wink on the 11h flight. Sitting up for that duration was a problem as I have aches from an injury from earlier in the year that are aggravated by sitting.
