Flying north

18 October 2006

Today we fly from Mumbai to Delhi.  I had set the alarm for 0645 but with the clock on Malaysian time it rang at 0415.  But I didn’t realise that until I had showered.  So, I was nice and clean when I crept back into bed for a rest.

After breakfast we took a taxi to Mumbai domestic airport for our 1115 flight to Delhi.  The one-hour ride was a little shorter than expected so we had to wait about half an hour till check-in opened 2h prior to our flight.

Our SpiceJet flight was delayed by 20 mins.  At the boarding point, we no longer had to identify our checked-in luggage, by pointing, as a security measure.  It was a nice surprise to have cookies and water offered on the budget airline’s 737-800 service.

Arriving in Delhi, Kim’s parents and their driver Mushtaq were waiting for us.  Delhi felt hot but dryer than Mumbai.  The streets looked cleaner than I recalled and also cleaner than Mumbai.

We were driven to John and Olga’s house.  John is Kim’s father’s half-brother, whom they discovered only a few years ago.  When we arrived only Olga and Shaun (her son) were there but John came home later after we had left.  We had afternoon tea there.  When the power and fan went off, it seemed much warmer.

Afterwards we were driven to the YMCA where we had been booked in to stay, with Kim’s parents.  When we realised the lift was broken, Kim’s mum threw a wobbly.

Dinner was included at the YMCA.  We enjoyed a chicken curry, vegetable curry, rice, roti and then ice-cream.  We went out to the internet after dinner before retiring for the big drive to Dehradun tomorrow.
