Sights of Subotica

16 October 2022

Above: Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Theresa of Avila with huge cracks in the facade. Apart from the facade area, it’s still in use.

At breakfast, I saw the staff smoking behind the bar when there was a no smoking sign.  I later realised that smoking is still common in Serbia.

I headed out around 0820 to take in the sights of Subotica before moving on to Novi Sad in the early afternoon.

My first sight was the Roman Catholic Cathedral of St Theresa of Avila with huge cracks in the facade. Apart from the facade area, it’s still in use as I saw people going in for Sunday mass. I found out later that the cracks are probably from inadequate foundation for the two bell towers, causing them to splay slightly and pull the centre of the building apart.

Google Maps had indicated that my route would take about 40 mins but with stops along the way, I took in the sights of the lovely town in about 1h20.

Around town, I noticed that signs were sometimes in Cyrillic Serbian, Latin (turns out it is supposed to be Croatian rather than Latin Serbian) and Hungarian.  A sign that we’re close to the border and there are minorities living here.

The town centre was pretty deserted being a Sunday morning. In the main pedestrian mall, there were too many “slot clubs” or one-arm bandit shops.
