Last of the Kiwi summer

16 February 2019

While in the lounge, I had cleverly gone online to reselect my seat so that I had a spare seat next to me (two people in a row of three).  I shared the row with a young lady who came on with four cabin bags, comprising of a wheelie, a 20 litre backpack, a large shopping bag and a small one!  We shared the extra seat between us and she slept soundly for the whole eight hour flight without even going to the loo once!

What I did notice on my toilet visits was the “Push” sign on the door. The Arabic word أدفع can mean “pay” or “push”. So the “Push” sign on the toilet door can be misinterpreted as “Pay’. Like what Ryanair and some other budget airlines have been supposedly contemplating.

For me, I didn’t sleep wink.  Due to the 1630 departure, I wasn’t sleepy and by the time I was sleepy, there was only about 2 hours till the pre-landing snack service.  Despite that, I was fairly OK upon arrival.

Luggage turned up at the conveyor at Auckland soon after we arrived into the terminal by bus from the remote gate.  I was on tenderhooks until my suitcase turned up 55 minutes after arrival.  I reckon it was the very last bag!

This was a very routine and regular trip to spend time with my 92 year old Mum.  Fortunately I was able to combine it with a meaningful reunion with cousins in Sibu plus a little break in Bali.

While it had been scorching and humid in Auckland during my absence, the temperature had plumetted due to strong southerlies for my arrival. Looks like I’m back for the last of the Kiwi summer.
