Mile-high army rations

30 January 2019

Despite having three seats from Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur, and a sleeping pill, I didn’t sleep the entire flight as I have in the past.  I woke up about three hours before landing and felt peckish.  I settled for a meal that I hadn’t tried before and a visit to the galley revealed that it was made from army rations (sachets of meat in black sauce, separate rice, assembled by the crew in the aluminium casserole with labelled lid and then heated).  It was delicious despite knowing how it was prepared.

On one hand, one could say it is bad food.  On the other hand, it allows the airline to cut wastage of unsold meals but also offer more choice than normal meals plus instant noodles. Mile-high army rations!

We arrived into Kuala Lumpur 45 minutes ahead of schedule at 0220.  As I was doing as self-connection, I couldn’t risk taking the 0700 flight to Kuching (with Chinese New Year around the corner, there was no room for error with delays) but had booked myself on a flight around 0900.

I was out landside before 0300.  Fortunately there were two lounges landside near the arrival area that I could use to kill time, eat up and have a shower.

Surprisingly, I was alert and motivated enough to power through lots of admin that had been on my “to do” list for yonks

Expecting crowds for the upcoming festive season, I went airside early.  It only took 15 minutes from the lounge through security to the aircraft gate.  My flight bringing me home to Kuching to see family was flown by two female pilots and left 5 mins early.
