Flying high across Lesser Sunda

22 October 2011

We didn’t have much time this morning before our 1140 flight from Bali to Labuanbajo. We walked out of our hotel to grab some breakfast. Unfortunately at 8am, there was not much choice. Kuta is rather touristy and it was only pricey cafes or McDonalds and KFC … nothing cheap or local.

Our Lion Wings Air flight left about 20 minutes late (but it was still rather earlier having been rescheduled and brought forward 1h55). Surprisingly the infamous Merpati Nusantara airlines left on-time!

The 1h30 flight on a brand-new ATR aircraft took us over the various islands of the Lesser Sunda (Nusa Tenggara). While Bali was dry and slightly brown, the islands including Flores were decidedly parched against the deep blue seas.

We waited in the vehicle for another guest but he/she didn’t turn up, possibly because of the flight being brought forward so much.  It was a five minute drive from the airport to Bayview Gardens where we would stay for 4-5 nights (with some flexibility for a boat trip to Komodo).

We rested for most of the afternoon before walking into town to consider excursions for the coming days.
