Killing another day

23 October 2005

We have a day to kill today, with our departure at 2200 tonight.  Plans for horse-riding and various other options got washed away by the rain.  We took it easy, really easy.  In fact, we went back to bed after breakfast!

After a late lunch around 1400 at Cafe Ra’a (again), we wandered to the waterfront to watch locals player soccer.  Rodger wandered off to try collect business cards so he could try make his trip tax-deductible.  The rain returned as we were at some statues by the water.  There were some rock art there as well; not sure if they are authentic.  We returned to the room while Rodger explored Ahu Tahai again.

Later in the afternoon, we walked into town for a precautionary snack of empanadas, so we wouldn’t be hungry and without any food.  We had discussed this before and Rodger quizzed me at length:  What is it?  Is it whwew locals eat?  He even checked with Kim before we went, asking if it was disgusting!  The empanadas turned out very nice, especially with salsa.

We checked out in the evening and were given a shell and feather gift on the way to the airport.  What a perfect gift for people bound for New Zealand!  Both are banned from entry into the country!

Check-in at the airport was swift.  We waited outside for the plane to land.  It was cold and windy again.  We chatted with a couple that worked on the Italian Prime Minister’s boat.  He’s an engineer and she’s a chef.  They buy one property a year in Auckland on their pay!

Our LAN Chile flight left about 45 mins late.  The Business Class seating was a newer with a big personal TV but seemed less comfortable.  I didn’t sleep this time.  We landed in to Papeete on time at 2320 with about six hours connecting time for our next flight.
