Little India

13 October 2004

Due to my body being on Auckland time, I woke at 0330, then 0430 and 0630.  But I lazed till 0730.  Kim’s mum, Fiona rang while we were having breakfast.  Last night, their taxi driver had a little trouble finding their hotel.  Then their aircon malfunctioned which necessitated a shift to a different room.

Kim and I together with Mum and step-dad drove down to town to see Kim’s parents Pat and Fiona in their hotel.  We left Kim with them while Mum, step-dad and I went shopping at nearby Mustafa’s.

Mustafa’s is a super-duper supermarket and department store, located in the Little India area.  It sells electronics, clothes, jewellery and almost anything you can think of.  The food section has canned, packet, fresh, dried food of all sorts.  The paratha section had more types of parathas than I knew, plus other kinds of Indian breads and yummy-looking frozen meals.

From Mustafa’s we walked across the road to Annapoorna vegetarian restaurant where we had a thosai, naan, chapatti with vegetarian curries.  Mum had a mango lassi, step-dad a coffee and I a ginger milk tea.  It was a cheap and delicious meal for all.

We picked Kim, Pat and Fiona up from the Serangoon Central MRT.  Fiona looked rather frazzled and inconherent.  Perhaps it was the heat, but she is good for her age.

We had afternoon tea of pastries, cakes and fruit at home.  Trying the dragon fruit, Fiona didn’t like it.  That was a surprise as it is a very refreshing fruit in this heat despite being light on flavour.

We went out for a family dinner at Serangoon Garden Estate’s hawker centre.  It was a very delicious meal of various street food like satay, mee rebus, mee goreng and gado-gado.  Fiona picked out the fishcake from her mee goreng.  Again, this surprised me as all the food was familiar to her.

We put Pat and Fiona in a taxi back to the Perak Lodge before we headed home.
