Catchup on a nightstop

30 July 2025

A bit of a fright

I had a bit of a fright this morning with my flight departure time to Kuala Lumpur which I had thought was at 1320.  I had thought of going to the airport at 0945 to have brunch at the lounge but didn’t think I could last till then without breakfast.

While having a piece of toast at 0845, my phone reminded me of my flight which was at 1135. Fortunately, I was almost ready, so I hurriedly asked my brother to prepare to leave at 0925 instead.

With my poor eyesight at my age, I had mistook the flight arrival time instead of reading the departure time.

I ended up having about an hour in the lounge before boarding the AirAsia flight to Kuala Lumpur.  Had I left home at 0945 I would not have missed the flight.  I would have had maybe 20 mins in the lounge but I would have been rather stressed.

Half-day in KL

Landing in KL for my nightstop at 1320, I managed to hop on the 1400 bus to KL Sentral.  The ride took 1h05 today with some traffic.  It was a about a third of the train price and only 25 mins longer on a good day.

Tonight, I’m trying a new hotel called Alaxis (formerly Euro Life).  I got there at 1515 and I was meant to met a friend Patrick for drinks around 1700 and then dinner at 1800.

It wasn’t quite enough for a long massage and a shower afterwards before meeting up.  So, I killed time in the room for a bit more than I had wanted as he had underestimated the travel time.

We met a couple of doors away from my hotel at the Indian Spices Village and had a great catch-up.   He had moved to KL only a few weeks before with a new job.

Another friend Thomas joined us around 1800 for dinner.  The restaurant specialises in Chettinad cuisine, referring to a specific region somewhat in the middle of Tamil Nadu.

I only know one Chettinad dish, which is chicken varuval.  The sauce was awesome but the chicken bony. The other dishes were more common Indian ones.

I finished the day with a 2h blind massage.  Unfortunately, the masseur did work as strongly or as specifically as I would have liked.

Aloo gobi masala, superb Chettinad chicken varuval, unusually thin garlic naan, mutton keema balls, mint lemon (sweet & salty), plain uttapam, palak paneer, masala chai.
