Arriving in Suceava
We landed at Suceava’s little airport at 0115. I love small airports like this an was out at the taxi rank in minutes. With the taxi not accepting card, it was only a short walk to the ATM in the departure hall to get cash.
While waiting, a kind gentleman had called the My Continental hotel for me to advise of my late arrival. But I was still glad that I had booked a large hotel with a 24h front desk for this stay.
The taxi ride cost RON73 but due to the lack of change, the driver took only RON50. It was a lovely welcome back to Romania.
Exploring Suceava
I slept from 0200 till 0700 and dozed till 0800 before enjoying a buffet breakfast. It is nice to be in an affordable part of Europe again.
Around 1000, I headed out by foot to explore Suceava. First up was The Seat Fortress of Suceava. With limited time, I headed there knowing that it was closed today. The walk through a forested hill was lovely and better than the view of the closed and scaffolded fortress.
Next, I went to the Monastery of St John the New, to find it scaffolded under heavy external restoration. In fact, it was fenced off also, meaning that I couldn’t go see the interior, which was probably being worked on as well.
Realising that I had missed the St George’s Church on the road to the fortress, I backtracked there. The door was open but a metal gate was somewhat ajar, so I took a quick look inside. With no lights on, there was a limit to how much I could see and appreciate.

I crossed the road to the St Demetrius’ Church which was brighter inside but still dark, which is kinda the Orthodox style.

With the sightseeing done, I went to the Lidl supermarket not too far away. Unlike in big cities, there was hardly any premade food such as salads or sandwiches. But I did get some good peaches and plums, as I had done in Rome too.
With a nice hotel room and finally some time to relax, for a change, I jumped at the opportunity! I finished the day with a simple dinner at a Greek gyro shop.
