Flying to Madeira

Leaving Vienna

Today we have a 1505 Wizz Air flight from Vienna to Funchal, Madeira.  We checked out of our hotel at 1030 and got to Vienna airport about 4h before our flight, spending just under 3h in the lounge.

In the typical budget airline fashion, we were scanned through at the boarding gate then stood waiting to board the actual aircraft in the heat of the airstairs that led down to the tarmac.  After about 20 mins, the aircraft was ready.  We then walked briefly across the tarmac up another set of airstairs onto the A321neo.

The 4h55 flight went relatively quickly even though it was chocka and the seats had no recline.

Arriving in Funchal

We landed in Madeira’s Funchal airport on time, rang the rental car agency and collected the rental car well in time before their closing.

We had our tough introduction to driving on Madeira straight away.  The roads were windy, going in and out of each “inlet” with newer elevated highways as an alternative.

The entry to highway we wanted was very close to the older road and it wasn’t easy to distinguish on Google Maps unless one zooms in closer than the default zoom level.

We took a wrong turn, resulting in a longer drive to The Goat’s Place, a B&B located up a very steep hill where we had to park on the slope and chock the back tyre with a rock.

The place was located at the western end of the runway and planes do their final turn and approach to land.

We settled into our lovely B&B and took some snacks and called that dinner.
