A Greek island

Leaving Bratislava

With an evening flight from Vienna to the Greek island of Zakynthos, we had a bus booked from the nearby bus stop to Vienna airport at 1135.

We wanted to stay in for the morning but did pop out briefly to get some delicious pastries for breakfast from Billa supermarket.  While doing that, we also walk along the Danube briefly to see the various passenger river boats that had arrived for daytime excursions.

Thoughts on leaving Bratislava

We really enjoyed ourselves with a nice relaxing stay in Bratislava.  It wasn’t “wow” and we hadn’t expected it to be.  We loved the laidback pretty small old city that wasn’t overrun with tourists.  We like the fact that locals are living their day-to-day without chasing the tourist dollar.

Enjoyed, relaxing.  Not overrun with tourists even though today more.  Living for themselves rather than the tourist dollar.

Flying out of Vienna

Arriving at Vienna airport around 1220, we headed airside and enjoyed 3h at the Vienna Lounge which had won Lounge of the Year.  I quickly understood why it had been a winner, with the amazing spread of hot meals, cold options, dessert and drinks.

Boarding the Wiz Air flight was a bit unusual.  We entered the airbridge and had to wait in the stifling metal tube until allowed to disembark air-stairs which had been kinda affixed to it, walking down to the tarmac.

From there, we walked a few metres to another set of stairs to walk up to the A321neo.

I guess this saved a few minutes and Euros for the airline, rather than having to use the airbridge.

The 1705 flight to Zakynthos left a little late but very full.  On board, the crew were chirpy but the seats didn’t recline.

We arrive on time, about 2h later at 2015.  Despite the aircraft being parked outside the terminal, we had to be shuttled to the arrival hall which was located on the upper level of the terminal building, up a bus ramp.

With no bags, we rushed to the OK Mobility car rental office which was located across the road from the airport. A little detour was required as a fence meant that we couldn’t walk “as the crow flies”.

Getting there at 2030 before their 2100 closing, we were surprised there wasn’t a queue of people before or after us.

With the paperwork sorted, we commenced our drive to the Hera Hotel about 15 mins away, stopping at a supermarket briefly.  To my surprise UHT milk from Germany is about half the price of the fresh stuff.  Not knowing if we have a fridge, I naturally chose the cheaper longer-life version.

Later in the hotel while making a cuppa tea, we realised the tap water was very salty!  We ended up having to buy a six pack of bottled water for drinking and making hot drinks from Lidl supermarket but it was very cheap.
