National Transport & Toy Museum

26 May 2020

Today we took a drive to Wanaka.  I’ve been several times before but this time Kim wanted to take us to the National Transport & Toy Museum.

We had a recommendation to grab lunch at Big Fig cafe.  It certainly didn’t disappoint.  They had a good selection of salads available.  Three salad choices with a meat choice was NZD12.  A little pricey but it was quality food.  I chose the stew beef cheek which turned out very tasty and tender.

The National Transport & Toy Museum is located beside Wanaka Airport:

  • In the first building, they had an amazing collection of toys (eg. car/bus models, dolls, train sets) and other things (eg. spoons, sewing machines, salt and pepper shakers).
  • The next building had fire engines, trucks and cars.  In fact, they have so much stuff that most trucks had other stuff on it that haven’t found space elsewhere.
  • The last two buildings had aeroplanes, the most memorable of which was a Fokker F27 which Kim used to fly on as cabin crew.

Family run museums of this nature are usually quite messy, perhaps like visiting a hoarder’s home.  This museum was better than most of the same genre.  For people my age, some things are good reminders of our childhood.  Others are reminders of our early adulthood.

Despite enjoying the museum, I didn’t take any photos. It was quite a cluttered site and I didn’t find it conducive for taking photos.

We continued for a cuppa tea at a friend’s house before going to Frankton to shop for some interior decoration items to complete the furnishing of our new apartment unit.  It turned rather cold and we finished the day with a warming Indian dinner there.
