Long ride back to the big city

21 October 2015

We had a lazy day yesterday after the walk in the park the day before. We spent the day largely in bed and in the room, but I did put my time to good use booking some more air tickets for August 2016. Our only foray out into the sunshine was for food at the nearby tourist centre.

That restful day prepared us well for the long ride back to Chengdu. Our hotel had listed us on the 0830 bus which meant departure from the hotel at 0730. The smog began appearing about 2h into the journey. Our first stop was only 3h after departure at an old fashioned toilet block where there were low-partitions with no doors, useable for both for Number 1 and Number 2. How’s that for versatile?

We had a lunch stop rather soon after that where I had a bowl of cold noodles and big-headed beansprouts with chilli oil, followed by a roasted sweet potato. We were treated with an extra stop (compared to the outbound journey) at a motorway modern toilet facility where some women were washing their laundry and hair at the hand basins. It’s a reminder that many people in China still live in very basic conditions and the motorway toilet stop is far better than what they have at home.

The journey back was an hour shorter. We managed to get a taxi from the station to our hotel with a little difficulty. After all the oily Sichuan food, we agreed on a lower fat meal at McDonald’s.
