Exploring Batavia

6 May 2008

Jakarta isn’t a city I had planned visiting by itself … perhaps as a gateway to Java and the more interesting cities. But AirAsia had just launched a new route from Kuching to Jakarta and offered free flights both ways! Fuel surcharge and taxes excluded. It was an offer too good to refuse especially when we managed to get 75% off staying the Ibis Hotel in the centre of the city as well.

We spent the best part of our first day on sights of touristic interest … the Sunda Kelapa port with its impressively big pinisis (wooden boats) and watching cargo being loaded and unloaded by hand.

We then moved on to Taman Fatahillah which is the preserved old Dutch town where Batavia started … there was a Museum and a very nice restaurant.

Apart from that, lots of hanging around malls … shopping and eating! And lots of sleeping too.
