Feeding the fish at Papeete, French Polynesia.
Diving is a relatively new interest to me. Thanks to budget airlines, I've been lucky enough to dive in some of the best sites in the world ... lucky enough to make people who have made hundreds of dives green with envy. Some of my diving experiences have been better than others ... so it is good to share! |

We had two dives with Bajo Dive Club. First was Manta Point (Karang Makassar) where we saw four ginourmous manta rays spanning about 5m. Next was a drift drive at Tatawa Besar where we went past the most amazing coral gardens I've ever seen ... unfortunately in fast motion due to the strong drift. |

We received a complimentary dive from Seahawk Divers as a goodwill gesture for a failed sighting of whale-sharks due to bad weather. It's a good indication of the kind of business they are but unfortunately the weather was bad during the dive too. I would love to come back not just for the whale-sharks but also for more diving in the Cancun / Isla Mujeres area. |

I did three dives at Pulau Weh this visit ... one excellent, one good and one disappointing. My favourite here has to be Batee Tokong where I saw sharks last year, and plenty of good stuff this year including barracudas, octopuses and a turtle. I'm a bit of a size-queen of the deep and don't care for the small stuff; hence the dive I found disappointing may be good for other people. There are many good sites (including an underwater hotspring) which may more suited for people with more advanced certification (ie. not me) as the best stuff can be down around 30m. |

We hadn't decided on diving in Nha Trang, but at only USD40 for two fun dives, it was too good to be true. The fish life wasn't anything to write home about but the coral was quite good. Our operator, Coco Dive Centre was good in every respect except that their local dive masters tend to be quite touchy with the coral and also tease the fish ... to maximise the entertainment. |

I paid a visit to the Andaman Islands, which is the part of India that's closer to Phuket and Banda Aceh than the Indian mainland. While over there I dived with Andaman Bubbles at Havelock Island.
Being in the Indian Ocean you'd think that the diving would be amazing ... but it wasn't the best (but remember I've dived Sipadan and Bunaken). As I only did two dives (Aquarium and The Wall), I thought my sentiments may not have been justified but a French couple who did many dives (at many sites) there shared my views. By the way, you can dive with an elephant too, if you wish! |

While in Aitutaki, we did a couple of dives with Aitutaki Scuba at Rapae Wall and Main Passage. The marine life couldn't compare with Malaysia and Indonesia. The operators were very casual ... no one has ever said to me before "Hop on in and I'll see you at the bottom". |

Banda Aceh has recovered from the tsunami of 2004 and now serves as a good base to Pulau Weh, which has really good diving. The water is beautiful and the marine life is good too as I saw two sharks, morays, giant trevallys (amongst many other things) at Batee Tokong.
I stayed and dived with Lumba Lumba Diving Centre, a friendly and relaxed place. I had the best attention from the very professional dive masters here ... to the point that I now doubt the previous outfits I've dived with! With only one day of diving, I managed only a dive at Gapang Beach (refresher beach dive) and wonderful Batee Tokong. |

Thanks to AirAsia, Manado is now accessible at reasonable cost (unfortunately they've sinced canned that route). Diving (and staying) with Living Colours in Bunaken was very good, considering that our previous dives were in Sipadan. Nice barracudas, lionfish and turtles amongst many others. During our two days, we dived at Aluang Banua, Lekuan II, Sachiko II and the House Reef. |

We had a long weekend trip over to Cairns which included a one-day excursion (including lunch) to Great Barrier Reef, Moore Reef specifically. We added on two short dive with Sunlover Cruises. Considering how famous the Barrier Reef is, it wasn't that great! I suppose it depends on exactly where you go. |

I'm so lucky to have dived here so early in my diving life. Everything else in the future may seem like a disappointment. Sibuan on the first day was a good start, but the second day at Sipadan (Barracuda Point, South Point and Hanging Gardens) was unbeatable. The swirls of barracudas were amazing. As a result, the last day at Kapalai (Sunken City) and Mabul (Oil Rig and Paradise 2) was a fizzer. Our operator was Sipadan Scuba and underwater photos are courtesy of Christian Albert. |
